Deaf Day @ Disneyland March 14, 2009

Amanda, her dad, Gonzálo and her brother, Joseph went to Deaf Day at Disneyland on Saturday, March 14, 2009.

It's been 6 months since Amanda's cochlear implant was activated and her brain is still working to make sense of what she's hearing in noisy environments.  She doesn't always share freely about what she can hear, so it's exciting when she volunteers information.

When she got home, she told me that she heard the music, actors singing and speaking in the live stage play, "Aladdin" in Disney's California Adventure.  She sat up close and was especially excited to hear the Genie's voice.  :-)

Amanda used a sport band to be sure that her processor stayed firmly in place on the fast rides.  It was cold and she also kept her sweatshirt hood on most of the day.

She posted additional Disney photos on her facebook page.

It has been an exciting 6 months adventure and we're looking forward to the next 6 months.  Her PE teacher, Lindy texted me the other day to say that Amanda kept saying she heard a pager or something ringing.  Lindy tried to locate what it was, but couldn't figure it out.

Later she sent me another text message to say she had finally figured out what it was that Amanda had been hearing.  It was birds outside.  :-)

LOVE the pictures, and I especially got a kick out of Amanda hearing the bird...how cool! (Birds make such different sounds, and I often have no idea if I'm hearing a bird or something else.)

It looks like a great time was had by all! :)

What a fun day! I love the fact that she heard the birds outside during PE. Spring is coming to the eastern US, and when the birds start it becomes a real racket!

Laura - Disneyland is ALWAYS aces! :-)

Wendi - Ditto above! :-) More and more birds are out and about now that spring is around the corner. It will be fun to see if Amanda can tell the difference. She wants me to change my ringtone for my Sidekick because it is currently a bird sound I have normal hearing and sometimes I'm confused it it is my SK or real birds!

Charlotte - When I read your comment I showed it to Amanda, who didn't have a clue what a magpie was. So we Googled it and saw some great magpie photos. Not sure if we get them here in California.

Olivia - Yeah! Aladdin is one of Amanda's favorite shows at DCA. She must have seen it close to 50 times. She's seen it probably maybe 4 times since being implanted. First time she actually commented on what she was hearing there.

Glenice - Thanks! We're looking forward to more birds! Amanda and I walked Goldy around the block yesterday and she could hear some dogs barking, but others she couldn't.

Leah - I LOVE the bird racket myself! We're looking forward to Amanda being able to distinguish more and more of them.

Hong Kong Betty - Yes, I've been really busy! Have not posted as often as before....must admit that Facebook has been taking up more of my time. Check it out if you haven't already. Amanda is on fb too. :-)
